Stock Market Gyan

Review of the Indian markets as on 14th July, 2009.

My advice for the traders would be to stay away from the stock market for some time because it is really not the time to invest or trade in this kind of a volatile market. If we see the values of the SENSEX and the NIFTY for the last three months we see the bull run for the two started from 10965 and 2850 points respectively.

Seeing the BSE and NSE charts we find that the actual value of the NIFTY and SENSEX should be in and around 2800 and 11200 respectively. My advice is keeping your money in your hands, maintaining liquidity and investing only when the market reaches these price points. Also, watch out for the price of crude as it is at a crucial mark of $60 a barrel. If the price at the market reaches to $40- $45 a barrel this would cause an overall decrease in the price levels and would make the SENSEX and the NIFTY come to the levels mentioned earlier. Also the prices of commodities are at a high value due to a weak monsoon If the condition worsens the FMCG stocks may also get affected in a negative way

Some of the good issues which as slated to be out in the near future are:
NHPC OIL, ADANI POWER, JINDAL ENERGY & etc. There is a good probability of them yielding a twofold return on investment

From a risky trading point of view, scripts such as RCOM, ADLABS ARIVA T&D, ABB, CRAIN may give you a 10 to 20 % return in short time but trade in these stocks only if you can hold them

In the present scenario, taking into consideration the stock charts, some of the stocks which you can hold for while and make money for long term are given below:

IDFC, IDBI, NEYVILE LIGNITE, MARICO GMDC,ASSAM COMPANY

MBA STUDENTS OF CEPT UNIVERSITY BAG MULTIPLE SUMMER INTERNSHIP OFFERS

Despite the specter of global recession, the pioneering batch of CEPT University’s MBA programme of Technology Management has successfully completed its summer internship process with the full batch being offered multiple offers. Essar Power, Torrent Pharma, Gujarat Gas, L&T, HDFC Bank, ISRO, GNFC, Savvy Infrastructure, Arvind Mills, Sintex , Bombardier, IIM - Ahmedabad and Adani Power are some of the organizations which have offered projects to these budding “technology-managers”.
The projects profiles being offered to students include the management of technology in the areas of supply chain management, operations management, organic solid waste management, project planning and control, contractor relationship management, performance management system as well as commercialization and exploitation of Intellectual Property Rights. The students are glad that in spite of the slowdown each of them has atleast two offers on hand on projects focused on his/her area of interest.

With an anxious set of students in a new management program which is different from a traditional MBA, it was not easy to complete the internship process. However the task was achieved with having focused interactions with industry heads from various sectors throughout the year so that sector-wise manpower needs are understood in detail. The focus of these interactions was to understand the manpower requirement of our industry and thereby identify the gaps in the manpower requirements. Mr. Sunil Parikh, Corporate Advisor at Zydus Cadila facilitated the whole process. The industry is in need of manpower in the field of technology management and thus has responded well to the program.

Another initiative which facilitated industry interaction was conducting of a “Workshop on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)” in which people from various sectors of Indian industry engaged in IP creation, commercialization and exploitation shared their knowledge and expertise with the students of CEPT’s MTM programme.

The students are now looking forward to their internship after having undergone rigorous coursework over two semesters built on a foundation of core courses in business and management integrated with classes in technology and specially designed courses in technology management.

CEPT University is also looking forward to welcoming the second batch of the MTM programme for which the admission process has just begun.

Mexico City Tries to Clean Up Its Act With Urban Vegetation

Written by Jack Moins
Sunday, 01 March 2009

Greater Mexico City is the third largest metropolitan area in the world and the largest in the Western Hemisphere with a population of over 22 million people. The city is home to much of Mexico's economy, industry and culture.

However, it is also horribly polluted, contributing 1.5 percent of the world's greenhouse gas emissions. The city is so polluted, in fact, that 4,000 people die every year as a direct result of the toxic chemicals that float in the air over much of the city. The Mexico City Human Rights Commission declared that the state of the city was a "violation of the right to a healthy environment."

The good news is that the city's leadership appears to be finally making a push to clean up their act. A new project has been launched called Sustainable Housing Units, which seeks to create a vegetative urban environment to help clean up the city's air.

Dolomite Occurrences In Chhotaudepur: A Cost-Benefit Analysis For The Local Economy- Being Conducted by FAM

The project may be defined as a detailed study of dolomite mineral (reserves, grade, existing market, mining practices, scope etc.), as it occurs in Chhotaudepur (District Vadodara, Gujarat), and the local economy (family assets, average incomes, literacy, employment, estimates of dolomite reserves of their land holdings etc.) for the development of a comprehensive socio-economic model which would ensure direct benefit to the local population.

An important requirement from the project is the compilation and cataloging of Geological, Industrial and Social data mined from Chhotaudepur for the purpose of creating a database for future studies.

The project is being executed by the coordinated efforts of Faculty of Applied Management and The Department of Construction Projects Management, CEPT Ahmedabad and is bound by the terms and conditions laid by Gujarat Mineral Research Development Society (GMRDS).

The LA Auto Show's 5 Most Exciting Green Cars

It was really difficult to pick the 5 most exciting green cars from this years auto show, primarily because I didn't know whether to focus on the concepts or those cars already on showroom floors or in the pipeline for the near future. That said, I think you will find my choice a mix of these two categories, because as important as it is to have green options right now, there's no denying that the future is looking even brighter.
Here are my top from, from least to most exciting:
5. Nissan Cube
It may seem strange to put the Nissan Cube on a list like this because it will only get a shade above 30 mpg for it's EPA rating, but I think the Cube represents a new kind of car for the U.S. Sure, Scion has had the xB for several years and has already reached quite a few buyers, but it's still new to see such an untraditional car coming from a major brand in the U.S. I have seen these cars in Japan, and along with the Kei-class of cars, they represent a dramatically different way to look at personal transportation.
The Cube seats 5 and has a relatively small foot print and high gas mileage, but it's boxy shape eschews traditional styling for maximum utility. You may not like how it looks, but there's no denying that the car can hold a lot and it takes a lot of the energy out of the old "I bought an SUV so I could haul my sports equipment" argument. The Cube has incredible utility and I hope the concept of efficient use of space catches hold in the U.S. market.
4. Honda FC Sport
The FC Sport is just a design concept, but that doesn't mean we should be any less excited about it. Honda is well-known for creating the first certified hydrogen fuel cell car, and is continuing that tradition of innovation by trying to show consumers that not only is hydrogen eco-cool, but it can be just plain cool.
By highlighting the world premiere of this concept at the LA Auto Show, Honda stuck their necks out there to show there is still a future in green technology even with the turmoil in the auto industry. Above that, they are showing that design can be radically altered when new power plants are employed in the automotive industry. Clearly, cars like the FCX Clarity are designed for maximum consumer acceptance and that's how it can be repurposed so easily as the basis for the new Insight Concept. This, however, does not mean that the structure of fuel cell technology cannot be made to house an attractive, futuristic, and aerodynamic design, as embodied by the FC Sport.
3. Mitsubishi i MiEV
While the i MiEV will not be for sale in the United States for a least a few years, it will be on sale in Japan next summer for ~$40k (4 million yen) and represents the first electric from a major manufacturer to hit the streets in quantity.
However, the real highlight of the i MiEV from the auto show was my personal test drive. A lot of stigma surrounds electric vehicles in this country, and that's probably because no one has had the ability to actually drive one yet. But I can no say, first hand, that if electric cars represent the future of transportation in the United States, that future will not be slow, sluggish, or sloppy. The i MiEV accelerates better than the average economy car and has great handling, while at the same time being incredibly roomy and not feeling as cheap as many other small cars would.
2. MINI E
Though I missed my chance to test drive the MINI E during its world premiere at the LA Auto Show, there is no shortness of excitement over the car that will be soon leased to hundreds of people in both California and New York. The BMW Group is very serious about this car and the future of electric vehicles, and has attacked the problem by creating are car that is first off fun and exciting to drive, and secondly efficient and environmentally friendly.
Smart is currently working on their own electric offering, but the MINI E is the first serious electric to come out of the European market, and it's exciting that it will be sold in the United States rather than restricted solely to the European markets.
1. Honda Insight Concept
I picked the Honda Insight Concept as the most exciting green car from the LA Auto Show because it will be available in quantity in the U.S. market starting in the Spring of 2009. I'm incredibly excited about the possibility of seeing a car on showroom floors that not only gets close to 50 mpg, but will start at just $18,500.
In these tough economic times, we see that auto market really taking a heavy hit, and that includes hybrid cars, even with their popularity on the rise. This is primarily because hybrids are expensive. Even if your investment will be paid back over the life of the car in fuel savings, it's increasingly hard to put over $20k up front for a car that you are unsure how long you will keep it for. The new Insight will break that price barrier and open the car and hybrid technology to a new market of families, first time buyers, and generally thrifty individuals.

Hummer Getting Green

There are many shades between brown and green. Somewhere in between devil-may-care, pollute-as-you-go, overindulgent consumerism (Dubai’s planned air-conditioned beach being a perfect, albeit cartoonish example) and the eco-ascetic philosophy - that we must learn to live without any of the things we like – is a man named Johnathan Goodwin.Mr. Goodwin, a native Kansan, retrofits cars so that they can run on renewable fuels, such as biodiesel, hydrogen, or electric batteries. In that sense, he’s just doing what lots of other ecogeeks out there are doing – tinkering with cars so that they don’t need to run on gas. But Goodwin’s projects are no frugal economy vehicles – they exude luxury, size, power and style.Consider, for example, his 1400 pound Ford F450 that runs on diesel, hydrogen or natural gas. Or a ’64 Impala that has a raging 850 horsepower engine and gets 25 mpg. Goodwin works on projects for the rich and famous; his clients include Neil Young – whose 1959 Lincoln was converted into an EV with a 100 mile range – and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, whose 1984 Jeep now gets twice its old fuel economy (in addition to received souped-up power and handling). And then of course there’s his literally green Hummer that gets 40 mpg.
Goodwin’s creations may not win any green awards. 40 mpg is impressive for a Hummer, but it’s not that much higher than the average fuel economy in Europe. Besides, unless you’re either very wealthy or a muscle car fanatic, it would make little sense to pimp your ride out like that when you could just buy a new, fuel efficient car.Still, there is the philosophy behind it. Johnathan Goodwin believes in using renewable fuels and getting good mileage, but he also believes that a car should be fun to drive. “Nobody wants to sacrifice size and style to gain fuel efficiency,” he says. “And there’s no reason to do it.” To all those who believe that going green means tightening your belt he says – you can have your cake and eat it too.To be sure, some of the things we love are decidedly unsustainable, and need to change. I am certainly not entitled to a big powerful car simply because I don’t want to give it up. Goodwin’s point, though, is that as technology gets greener it can also get just plain better.

New Air Powered Car Looks Freakin' WEIRD

If you're going to radically change the way a car is powered, you might as well radically change the way it looks too...right?
I guess that's what MDI (the company who has been pioneering, or at least attempting to pioneer, the compressed-air-powered car for the last 20 years) was thinking when they created the air pod. I'm not getting any press releases in English, and my French is horrible, but from what I can tell, this new concept is going to roll off the production line in 2009.
The car will be powered by MDI's compressed air system, which uses electricity to compress huge amounts of air in small tanks. The air is then slowly released from the tanks, driving pistons that move the car. This system is hopefully going into American cars by 2010, and was licensed by Tata Motors for use in India and Europe.
The AirPod seats three (one facing backward) and the "playful and futuristic" design allows for an extremely light-weight and inexpensive vehicle. The top speed of the thing is just over 40 miles per hour and it has a range of only 130 miles before a refill is needed, so...obviously it will be just for city use.
Refilling an air car can be extremely quick (if you happen to have an aircar fueling station nearby) or quite slow (if you have to charge using an inexpensive home compressor.) But these cars are never dirty. Even if the power used to compress the air is pure-coal-fired power, these things are way cleaner than gasoline, and even cleaner than electric vehicles.
Why? Two reasons. First, their tiny city-specific design means that they're just going to be more efficient. But, second, the fact that the cars require no complicated, metal-filled batteries means that the environmental impact of construction is significantly lower.
Unfortunately, the trade-off is slow speeds and short ranges, which hopefully won't be too much of a detractor...at least in Europe, which is sure to be the AirPod's initial market.
Of course...I want one, but here in America we'll have to wait for the more expensive version that will (hopefully) go on sale in 2010.

Lecture By Mr Vinay Modi [ from CIIE at IIM Ahmedabad ]

FAM had organized a guest lecture by a budding entrepreneur Mr. Vinay Modi at FAM campus. This dynamic person had a master of science (M.S) in Computer Science from University of Edinburgh and had come back just after 4 months of job in U.K to pursue his dream of being a technology entrepreneur. This was back in 2007 after which he applied for Nirma labs to work in their incubator. Things didn’t go well for him during that part and he had to leave Nirma labs in the beginning of 2008. But then his Jinx ended and he applied for CIIE (Centre for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship) at IIM (Indian Institute of Management), Ahmedabad. His idea got accepted in addition to the ideas of 4 others out of a total of 85 applications and he has been working in IIM incubator ever since then. It was a great experience to listen to a lecture by a person who has been so imaginative and full of ideas all these years. His presentation centered on the following points:

1. Idea- the first and the most crucial thing as far as entrepreneurship is concerned.
2. Sharing of the idea so as to refine your idea.
3. Life cycle of technology.
4. The methodology for breaking the problem (the ink paper approach).
5. Why not have the train come to you rather than you going to the train on a railway station.
6. Fixing an electricity meter with a sms chip device which can directly send all the information to the electricity department without manual interference.
7. Modern methods of cooking, etc.
8. Designing in and around your idea to create value for the business.

Besides this he also made us aware about eminent personalities in technology management field such as Paul Graham. He also mentioned some important links such as Roland Piquepalle’s technology trends. He also talked about MIT technology review and tagging by Delecious. Many other sites and books were mentioned which are in our mailboxes so I don’t feel the need to elaborate on that any further. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Vinay Modi for sparing his valuable time with us here at FAM, CEPT University .

Creative Aspect Of Garba

The third one is something I wrote during Garba time. It’s style is modeled on the writings of Albert Camus and to an extent Raja Rao. It is a figment of my imagination and has nothing to do with Technology Management. But for those of you who love reading and writing it may be of some value. So here it goes

A bad start. The pen has failed us once again. Both me and you. The ink is probably dried. What instigated this sudden spark to write is utterly undecipherable at this moment. It is as if the search is for a hidden code. A missing link in developmental biology if you want to call it that.

Maybe, the past few days have been eventful. Indeed, they have been. The whole environment has changed. The approach is new and different. The change is multidimensional. Teachers’, strangers yet warm. Environment, new and bustling with youth. The surroundings old and having a sense of eternity. The occasion
‘Navratri’ or ‘nine nights’ of celebration brimming with eternal beauty.

All these make up a classic combination indeed. The youth dressed in attires as old as time itself dance to a cacophony of harmonious disturbances. The dancing is a cosmic creation. A perfect symmetry if I were a scientist. But wait a second the old are in the frame too. Relying more on experience than on muscles they create in a word- absolute magic.

The youth are no less if no more. They start the prayer by performing at the Aarti. The essence of the dance, its monotony. People dancing in circles of eternity, never ending just like life itself.

The dance is performed to an invisible to an invisible tune which can be heard by only the practiced year. The bodily movements are slow yet very well coordinated. The attire is royal. The young combine with the old to give rise to the new and the different. A very artistic exercise indeed which emphasizes a highly developed culture.

Anybody willing to dance can join in the eternal circle. A marvel of human effort the exercise is an attempt to see the present through the eyes of the past. It represents a dream if I were Coleridge, a dream that persists even after it has faded.
Clear yet dreamy the senses are left astounded by the sheer beauty of the cosmic dance. ‘Garba as it is called in Gujarati represents a struggle between co-ordination and the overall effect6 it produces on the dancer and the viewer i.e., transformation. Both are to enjoy. No not enjoy rather take ‘Ras’ in the ‘Ras Garba’. The viewer and the seen are transformed into something new and different. This is the whole of the art of garba. In a word infinite, yet played within a small area. Complex yet co coordinated to create a shift in perception. Using the old and new to create a cherished tradition. Unparallel beauty of the Garba should be appealing to the aesthetic tastes of all generations to come. May it continue just like its eternal circles

ISRO Visit Organized By FAM

FAM had organized a field trip to SAC (Space Applications Centre) which is an integral part of ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization). Here we first went to the Vikram Sarabhai Space Exhibition (which is open to all people from 10:00 hrs to 13:00 hrs on weekdays). We were briefly introduced to remote sensing and the activities and achievements of ISRO in the same. Besides this we were also made aware about the vision of a man to benefit the society through technology means. Dr. Vikram Sarabhai had said “Technology is not an objective to be aimed at, but a tool for the benefit of the common man.” This has been the guiding philosophy of ISRO all through. After this we had the privilege of going inside ISRO and interacting with none other than Dr. R.R Navalgund, the director of SAC. He briefed us about the activities of not only SAC but also about the activities of ISRO in total. His presentation centered on the following points:
ISRO as an organization and its various departments (such as SAC, DECU, etc).
Activities of ISRO benefiting the people of our country (such as distress alert transmitter used by fishermen, etc).
Remote sensing applications (in fields such diverse as agriculture, ocean biology, metrology, oceanography and disaster management, etc).
Technology Development as different from Technology Management and the need for Technology Management.
Indigenous Technology Development.

Besides this the meeting was rounded off by an interactive Question and hour session in which many doubts of students and faculty of FAM were laid to rest by the astute answers of Dr. Navalgund. Some questions were pertaining to organizational structure of ISRO and formation of teams for projects, etc. Dr Pestonjee also raised a pertinent question pertaining to gender ratio of ISRO.

After the question hour session we had lunch and were taken around to see some of the labs of ISRO. First we saw the RAR or the real aperture radar which is widely used in communication. Besides this we also saw the SAR or the synthetic aperture radar which is an enhancement of the RAR. Finally we went to the antenna testing zone the technology for which has been provided by Agilent, Germany. After this we had our evening tea and snacks to round off a very educative field visit. I would like to thank on behalf of FAM all the officials of ISRO and especially Dr R.R Navalgund for their kind attention and making this visit a dream come true.

One more day Gone: Disappointing yet full of life

One more day Gone: Disappointing yet full of life
DAY 2:- Second day was lonelier then the first day. Harsh, the Einstein, ran from the ground as if there was fire on his tail and when asked to play vanished away as if someone was trying to brain wash him to act as a suicide bomber. Sankalp, the Bhabha, never grew from something else but his friends, jaimin, the night dresser never turned up that day, samarth, the careless freak, was not allowed to enter the campus as he never had the id card. Jay (dressed in dhoti and kurta seemed cyanotype of a milkman) and me (dressed in such a way, people felt he is the creepy attitude man with no sense of occasional dressing sense). Something happened on second day, CPM people were trying to match the rhythm with us but unfortunately even they faced the problem initially. It seemed that they were trying to play with us, but as the time advanced, it became quite apparent that it was us (me and jai) who were trying to match ourselves with them (knowing the fact that they were more in number). It really disheartened us, but jai has a nice group in IIPM, and one of them is my regular partner for something that should not be mentioned here (not gay please!!). But will write about one of the girl, whom I found ahead of me, but at every quarter turn, she was confused to which leg to use to turn and on which drum beat should the turn be taken. I tried to correct her every time counting on the numbers as to how the steps were to be taken. Apparently, she was better at playing and I was relieved, as she was really not in co-ordination with my steps and that is the worst thing in this world that breaks my concentration. Throughout then, we were playing together and I came to visualize that she had great stamina (as much as mine). At 0000 hrs, we had our first break, and me and jay were so exhausted that we drank lemon juice and water (bhu-bhu), like camels. Though not to blame us, we played so rash and were so tired as if Einstein (not harsh), passing sleepless nights on E=MC2. At around 0030 hrs, the final round began which started directly with fast beats (chalti) and the dholis were playing like they never did before. Oops I forgot to mention, even on second day the dholis were blind people. Okay back on track, now jay is one creepy freak, we started playing and he saw his mallika-e-cept, and that’s it, he was trying to break all his energy in order to reach her. Fortunately, his efforts worked and he could reach exactly behind her. You should have seen expression on his face, he was like a dog in front of whom a lavish bone is placed. That is It for second day, and we were not at all in good mood because me and jai are real despo’s of garba and we thought that second day was also over now.

NAVRATRI FESTIVAL – WHERE NO ONE EXCEPT MTM ROCKED!!??

DAY 1:-

No one was as enthusiastic as me and Jai to go to garba. On the very first day, we reached before time (9 pm, though the official time was 8 pm!). I was in shock to find some of my classmates, Harsh (Einstein, very fond to check girls out ), Sankalp (Dr. Bhabha, very fond of his friends as he keeps on talking about his friends), Ann (who was very much dressed to play garba but never turned up on ground), Jaimin, about whom I was not able to decide whether he was dressed in a night suit or in an attire for garba..! Rest of MTM was totally hollow on ground. We started playing at around 10 o’ clock on the dhol beats of blind people who were banging with all confidence. They made people realize that they were not in sight did not mean they never had insight. They made our night more colorful then they would have seen. Me and jai started playing along other people of CEPT. I was dressed in casuals while jai was dressed in semi-traditional. But that did not bother us, it had a reason. The reason was that we were more concerned to garba, than to dressing. That night, there were no speakers, no voice and less crowd but though everyone was so hork in garba that these things apparently did not matter much.

About MTM Programme

In today's globally competitive business world, technology is essential to run nearly every business and every facet of business. It is a major factor impacting the pace of change in the business environment, which is faster today than ever before as new technologies and innovations force industries and firms to find new ways to compete and survive. For companies to succeed in this environment, people who posses both business savvy and technology expertise are required. Neither alone is sufficient, especially in emerging economies like India where technology transfer and development have assumedlot of significance; post India's compliance to TRIPS and productpatents. Huge influx of foreign investment by global giants in technology development, setting up of research centers by global companies, government policies facilitating Industry-Institute technology transfers are some of the factors that have compelled Indian companies to understand and manage technological innovation. In this emerging scenario, there is a dearth of skilled manpower to handle transactions of such complexities. Thus there is a need for training techno-managers to work in anybusiness/management environment which is technology driven.
